I know this is a touchy subject for white folks like me to broach, but this is a fantastic talk. This year, I’ve been on a quest to confront my privilege as a straight, white man. I acknowledge my privileged position to even sit here typing, stating that I intend to confront “my privilege.” I also fully acknowledge the inherent privilege of the speaker to even give a lecture like this, let alone be heard at universities across the United States, but that’s a debate for another day.
Tim Wise is an exceptional speaker and a very funny guy. He asks some tough questions in a non-confrontational format, albeit to an audience of white scholars. He does not, however, offer any answers. That responsibility is ours as stewards of the future.
Take an hour out of your weekend, put this on in the background while you do the dishes or something, and listen to some hard truths.
Step one of confronting my privilege: acknowledge that it exists.
